The Scarsdale Youth Soccer Club is a non-profit organization administered by Scarsdale parents. The Club selects, organizes and regulates boys and girls’ soccer teams to play in travel soccer leagues and tournaments, and selects the coaches of such teams. The Club also works closely with the Scarsdale Recreation Department.
This year the club expects to field more than 30 youth soccer teams which are evenly divided between girls and boys' teams. These teams are registered in the Westchester Youth Soccer League ("WYSL").The WYSL is a league that is part of both the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association and the United States Youth Soccer Association ("USYSA")
During the 2005-2006 school year, over 1,800 players enrolled in the Club's programs. Over 850 children and young adults between the ages of 9 and 18 participated on one of the SYSC travel teams. Over 1,000 players enrolled in the MicroSoccer and Rec Plus programs we sponsor along with the Scarsdale Recreation Department.
OBJECTIVES AND PHILOSOPHY
The Club's objectives are to provide children with the opportunity to participate in a travel soccer experience where they can develop positive self-esteem and build character by learning the virtues of hard work, respect, honesty, self-control, teamwork and sportsmanship. To achieve these objectives, the Club encourages its coaches to adopt a philosophy that seeks to achieve for the players the following:
In 2002, the Positive Coaching Alliance, a Stanford University-based educational organization that works with youth sports organizations around the country to create a positive environment for young athletes, announced that the SYSC was one of the initial winners of its National Awards for youth sports organizations that promote and exemplify the principles of positive coaching.
