Scarsdale Youth Soccer Club

U10 and Up Assessment/Tryout Information

•Tryouts are open to all children who attend or are eligible to attend school in the Scarsdale Union Free School District.  Tryouts for children trying out for U12 and older are open to children outside of the school district and a limited number of spots are available for children from outside the school district .

• Beginning with the U10 age group, players are placed on stratified teams to enhance player development. These teams will be formed by the end of the spring season, for the following fall.

• Tryouts are the final part of an ongoing process of performance evaluation by the UK Elite coaches and coaching directors.

• All players have been and will continue to be evaluated and ranked relative to their age groups – at the end of the 2012 Fall season and during 2013 Spring season, by both the age-group trainers and the appropriate director of coaching.

• For players already playing in SYSC, Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 performance at practices and games will form the MAJORITY of the basis of each player’s evaluation.

• The official tryouts are still a VERY important part of the process and must be attended by ALL players. If this is not possible due to injury, please click here to secure your child's placement on a team to the extent possible.

• Players currently U9 and older will preregister  for the age group they will play in next Fall through the club website (link below).

  • For each child trying out, a parent must fill sign TWO of the attached medical forms for each child (they must both be notarized).  These must be brought with the player to the tryouts.
  • Children should come dressed to play in shorts and plain white tops, with shinguards, non-metal cleats, and water.

• UK Elite will assign a tryout number for each player at registration.

• Tryout Schedule (see below dates / times for each age group).  Note that tryouts before Memorial Day are for age groups open ONLY to Scarsdale children.

• 2 tryouts for all players entering U10-U12

• 1 tryout for all players entering U13-U14 (with second try out date if needed at the discretion of the Directors of Coaching)

• Parents register, drop off their child's medical forms and child, and leave their child to enjoy their tryout

• Each tryout will be 90 minutes in length – and include a technical / game related curriculum designed by UK Elite Soccer

• Parents pick up at end of tryout

 • Based on number of players registered UK Elite will determine the number of teams and the appropriate number of players for each team in each age group for 2013/2014.

 • All players who preregister on time and tryout for U11 and younger teams will be placed on a team.  Children who do not preregister and attend tryouts are not guaranteed spots.  For ages U12 and up, the goal is to place all players on a team if possible, however based on numbers in each age group, cuts may be necessary. If needed, A WAIT LIST will be compiled in the older age groups once the teams have been formed.

 • The club will post results of tryouts on the club website, using tryout number for each player, not before the last game of the Spring season (June 16th).

 • Team names and roster sizes will be clearly defined at the time that results are posted

 • EVERYONE is given 24 hours to accept, pay and register for their team. Anyone requiring financial assistance must make arrangements with the treasurer in advance so that registration deadlines can be met.  Please see relevant  financial aid  policy for instructions if this applies to you.

 • If there are openings on teams after the 24 hour period, players assignments may change and wait-listed players may be offered spots.

For which age group should my child try out?

  • The league set maximum age cut-offs for each age group are below.
  • Players who played in U9 and above during the 2012-1013 season are encouraged (but not required) to tryout for the lowest possible age group to enhance player development and strength of teams throughout club.  This will result in a mix of two grades on any given team within the one year league set age group.
  • U8 and U9 players should register for the division based on their age.
  • In some situations trainers may suggest that a player tryout for an older age group.  Because there are significant differences in maturity as well as physical development of children in different age groups playing "up" to a higher grade will generally only be recommended/approved where the player has skills commensurate with the top half of the A players in the older grade and also is assessed to possess the physical and emotional maturity to benefit from such a placement.  If you have questions about which age group is appropriate for your child, please discuss them with your trainer or the director of coaching.

U8    August 1, 2005 to July 31, 2006

U9    August 1, 2004 to July 31, 2005

U10  August 1, 2003 to July 31, 2004

U11   August 1, 2002 to July 31, 2003

U12  August 1, 2001 to July 31, 2002

U13   August 1, 2000 to July 31, 2001

U14  August 1, 1999 to July 31, 2000

Note: The league groups children based on birth dates from August 1- July 31 of each year .   This means that most clubs' teams consist of the younger children from one grade (birth dates August through December) and the older children from the next (birth dates January-July). Because in the past Scarsdale has formed teams by GRADE rather than AGE, our teams generally have been younger and at a physical disadvantage compared with the teams we play against.  This means many of our teams end up playing in less competitive divisions in the league than they would if they were primarily age-based.  It also limits our teams' prospects to advance to more competitive divisions and potentially premier clubs. Placing children in their proper league-based "age group" should ultimately lead to stronger players and more successful experiences.

Out of town eligibility - A limited number of out-of-town players at U12 and up are permitted to play for SYSC.  Historically this has not been used very much, however we expect to use it more going forward subject to the following limitations:

U12: no more than 2 field players and 1 keeper

U13: no more than 3 field players and 1 keeper

U14 and up: no more than 4 field players and 1 keeper

U8 and U9 Travel Soccer

There are no tryouts for next year's u8 or u9 travel soccer programs.  For more information click here.

Please note that if your child is born before August 1, 2004 they will be too old to register for the U9 program due to the age cutoff set by the Westchester Soccer League.  Next Fall's third graders who are too old for the U9 travel soccer program may preregister for the U10 tryouts.  If you have questions about age groups policies, please click here.  If you need assistance with registration please email the registrar.
