If one were to gather their information about the Catholic Church from popular entertainment, Holy Mother Church would certainly seem like an old, antiquated, out of touch, despotic, patriarchal, judgmental, authoritarian, killjoy, and cancer, for 'normal' human life. And 'history' would seem to bear this out. For amidst a technologically distracted and low information generation, preceded by an intellectually deceptive and dishonest generation, plenty of misinformation about Catholicism abounds.
Yet, if one were to take an honest look at the history, and current status, of Holy Mother Church he, or she, would find the origins of science, the university system, international law, individual human rights, agriculture, not to mention the roots of Western law, economics, art, literature, morality, and organized charity.
But 'the powers that be,' would rather condemn our Holy Mother.
“'I will have no part in the death of this woman.' All the people turned and asked him, 'What is this you are saying?' He stood in their midst and continued, 'Are you such fools, O children of Israel! To condemn a woman of Israel without examination and without clear evidence? Return to court, for they have testified falsely against her.'" Daniel 13:1-9, 15-17, 19-30, 33-62
The Catholic Church, our Holy and beloved Mother, will always appear as garbage, as refuse, as the whore of Babylon, if the information we seek about her is from soiled sources. Learning about Catholicism from an ocean of misinformation--popular television shows, internet sites without accurate sources, equally non-academic books written by people with a bone to pick with our faith, college professors preaching from their ideologically driven soap boxes, street corner Protestants, and socialist politicians--will certainly lead us to being beached on the uncharted island of the foolishly deceived.
Before we execute Holy Mother, shouldn't we let her speak in her own defense?
"He guides me in right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk in the dark valley I fear no evil; for you are at my side With your rod and your staff that give me courage." Psalm 23:1-6
Though conversion is by the grace of God, not by our evangelization, the seeds we plant are vital. So too is our apologetic witness in the Truth of Holy Mother Church--One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic--the Body and Bride of Christ.
No person, believer or unbeliever, who is intellectually honest will condemn Holy Mother Church if he, or she, is introduced to Scripture, Tradition, and Magisterium, unfiltered. By this I mean that no honest person who reads the Church Fathers, the Doctors of the Church, the lives of the saints, the teachings of the Ecumenical Councils, Papal encyclicals, the writings of centuries of traditional theologians, and reads the gospel in light of this, while witnessing to the Mother Teresa's of the world, would ever condemn Holy Mother as an enemy of the human person.
Therefore, those who condemn Holy Mother, those who are informed and still condemn her, condemn her because she is, as the Body and Bride of Christ, the human person's One True Friend.
“Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” John 8:1-11
Our reaction, therefore, must be the Right response of Jesus.
They throw stones at Holy Mother Church, either because they don't really know her, or because they really know her and hate Her Spouse. In the first instance we must introduce them to her through the grace and Revelation of Jesus Christ. Therefore, we must not throw stones at them since we are in solidarity with them as we are all sinners in need of a Savior.
But in the latter case, we must fight the good fight, taking up our cross, fighting evil with good, even if we are crucified in the process. For in responding (with Truth and Love) to the hate of the attackers, we might bring powerful witness to the Crucified Jesus in a sadly misinformed world.
