When the local Greyhound racing track asked county commissioners to O.K. other forms of gambling at the track to shore up their failing business, many of us contacted commissioners and begged them to NOT comply as they would be furthering the suffering of these animals in the name of what is a losing proposition and a bad bet for all involved.
Despite the fact that continuing to nurture this nonsense once again puts Florida in the national spotlight for their backwardness, the BCC turned a deaf ear and voted to continue the cruelty while other states acknowledged that such cruelty has become unacceptable.
Maybe those at a higher level will approach it more intelligently… one can only hope. Well no, actually, one can do much MORE than hope: Today, Tuesday, April 8, 2014, is the day that our Senate Gaming Committee votes on both Greyhound decoupling AND injury reporting injuries to racing dogs.
If the first succeeds, the second could eventually become a moot point, but as it stands right now the Humane Society of the United States tells us that “A racing greyhound dies every three days in Florida. The Last Lap report shows 74 greyhounds died at Florida racetracks from May 31 to December 31, 2013. Shortly after the report's release, we learned at least 21 more dogs died.”
HSUS is willing to make it easy for you to step up and speak out. Just go to their prepared form , fill it out, and send it in. That’s all, couple minutes, easy peasey.
Please do this now and SHARE THIS ARTICLE with everyone who has the compassion to take a minute to fill out the form and pass it on. As HSUS notes, “If you get just three of your friends and family members to also take action, we can triple our efforts to help protect animals.”
Florida’s Greyhounds are waiting at the gate to be set free of the cruelty that is currently their lives and YOU can make a difference.
