- The Gardendale Board of Educationmoved quickly through its first official meeting Monday night, electingofficers and passing seven resolutions to set the groundwork for establishing a Gardendale City School System.
Board members elected Chris Segroves as the first GardendaleBoard of Education president.
"It's obvious in our short time together that this boardshares a common vision," Segroves said. "I'll say it's an honor for me to serveour community as a member of this board of education and it's a privilege towork with this great group of people."
The board elected Karen White as vice president, MichaelHogue as secretary, and Dick Lee as treasurer.
The school board also took the initial step in its searchfor a superintendent and a chief school finance officer by passing resolutionsto obtain consultative services from the Alabama Association of School Boardsto facilitate the search for both positions. The resolution stated that boardintends to hire a permanent superintendent as soon as possible and toconduct a regional search. Susan Salterwith the AASB met with the board last week and provided an overview of the processfor hiring a superintendent. Salter is scheduled to meet with the board for amore in-depth discussion on hiring a superintendent during a workshop meetingTuesday, April 8 at 6 p.m. at the Gardendale Civic Center.
"Employing these two positions are milestones of great significancefor the board," Segroves said. "We look forward to working with the AASB andleveraging their experience and their expertise to ensure we hire asuperintendent that shares in our vision of excellence and a chief schoolfinance officer who can support the board and the system in being an effective and efficient steward of the public's money entrusted to us."
The board also passed resolutions to hire Bradley ArantBoult Cummings, LLP for legal representation and to hire Carr, Riggs Ingram, LLC for accounting services. Donald Sweeney of Bradley ArantBoult Cummings represents several school systems and has worked with cityleaders and board members for the last several months. The city council hired Carr,Riggs Ingram to draft a pro forma city school budget when it wasexploring the financial feasibility of forming a school system.
In other business the board:Passed a resolution to adopt the AlabamaEducator Code of Ethics as the standard for professional behavior for the boardand subsequent conduct for its professional staff;Authorized registration for and the attendanceof the board members for the Alabama Association of School Board's SummerConference and training in June; and Passed a resolution to establish and maintainbanking accounts and utilize the services of First Commercial Bank. The cityhas funds set aside to transfer to the board for its initial operation costs.
The board will meet for a workshop tomorrow, April 8 at 6 p.m. at the GardendaleCivic Center, and it will meet in regular session May 6 at 6 p.m. at theGardendale Civic Center. Notices of BOE meetings are posted at City Hall.
