Travel Soccer for Third Graders (Fall 2009)

OUR THIRD GRADE FALL SOCCER PROGRAM IS NOW CLOSED. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN SOCCER FOR YOUR THIRD GRADER, please register to get our emails at www.sportssignup.com/scarsdalesoccer and we will notify you in November when we have our third grade Winter/Spring registration.

**********************************************

Our Third Grade Travel soccer program (2008-09) has been a huge success with approximately 110 third graders playing on 8 teams within the Westchester Youth Soccer League. Our optional clinics have been well attended, the games have been fun, and the feedback from children and parents has been very positive.

The fall season for the third grade teams is comprised of 9-10 games, usually on Sunday (the games start at Noon or later). Usually half of these games are in Scarsdale, and the other half of the games are usually within Westchester, but sometimes might be in the Bronx or Manhattan. All teams play in the Westchester Youth Soccer League (WYSL - go to
www.wyslsoccer.org to learn more about this league).

(*your child must have a birthdate no earlier than 8/1/2000 to be eligible for these teams. If you have an "older third grader", you should immediately contact our registrar - registrar@scarsdalesoccer.org to include your child on our U10 teams).

The WYSL requires that we determine in early July the total number of teams that we will be fielding at each age group and gender. Once this is completed, the WYSL creates a schedule for 500+ teams for the fall season, gets insurance for all players, arranges fields, referees, and registers approximately 14,000 players on 300+teams). Every child also gets a player pass (held by the coaches). Our club organizes medical information, our fields, our equipment, teams, coaches and a compendium of other administration. There’s a lot of work to get your child out on the field each week.

The third grade travel soccer experience is a "total participation program". All age appropriate kids for the third grade program who register by the deadline of JUNE 30th will be placed on a team.

Most of our travel teams (and ALL of our third grade teams) are coached by parents of some of the children on the team. We welcome new coaches.  There is a formal process by which we will evaluate all applicants for our coaching positions. All coaches have to complete background checks, attend an 8-hour coaching course (in January or February of 2010), and attend a 2-hour orientation (in September 2009) to coach in our league. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THESE POLICIES. If you are interested, please read our coaching responsibilities at "
For Coaches" . You can access our online coach application system there.

TIME COMMITMENT: Other than the game scheduled defined below, there is NO requirement that your third grade child attend any training for the fall. There are optional clinics that will be run during the week. You may choose to have your child attend zero, one or both of the optional clinics.

As a SYSC travel team players, your child MUST sign up and play RECREATIONAL SOCCER in the FALL of 2009. For more information and to sign up, go to the Scarsdale website and click on the Child-League Registration link.

As a reminder, the registration is for ONE SEASON ONLY. If your child enjoys travel soccer,  you will need to register again in December for the SPRING Travel Soccer.

**********************************************************************************

The Westchester Youth Soccer League will establish the game schedule which will vary from week to week. There will be a certified, trained referee at virtually every game. Scores will be kept internally by the league (for future seeding purposes), but at this age level NO scores are published.  The goal is “playing” not “winning”. We want our young ones to love being out on the field, not to worry about how the game ends up, or where they are in their division.

The most important things about playing soccer at this age are sportsmanship and children learning how to work as part of a team. This is of paramount importance to our club and league, and is the reason for the league’s sportsmanship program. The program exists at all age groups, but it’s highlighted for our youngest players. There are pins to celebrate player acts of sportsmanship, and patches and awards for those teams that show exemplary sportsmanship during the season.  Each team is rated by the referees at each game.  Good sportsmanship is expected of the players, parents and coaches. We are ALL expected to be respectful on our fields.

In each game, the children in attendance will receive approximately equal playing time.

To sign up, go to
http://www.sportssignup.com/scarsdalesoccer.start.start . Login if you have ever signed up for an SYSC program previously (please do NOT create a new account unless you are ABSOLUTELY SURE you have never signed up any of your children for an SYSC program before!), or create a user id, add your children and yourselves, and then register your child for Third Grade (Fall 2009) Travel Soccer.

Follow the directions for documentation requirements found at www.scarsdalesoccer.org/playerdocumentation.htm

Your child will not be considered registered AND WILL NOT BE PLACED ON A TEAM WITHOUT THIS DOCUMENTATION.
