Travel Team Tryouts
Tryout Overview:
“Not only must the tryouts be fair, but they must have every appearance of being fair.”
Before First Day
· The SYSC Tryout Coordinator - for girls, Grant Son and for boys, Chris Lonner, each a designated representative of the SYSC Board, will work with Mark Silvester, director of coaching and training for the SYSC and his staff of professional trainers
· The current U9 coaches are required to assist in the preparation and organization of the tryout
· The tryout drills will be practiced in the training sessions prior to the tryout, so the players are familiar with them before the tryout
· One week prior to the start of the first tryout session, each U9 head coach must submit to the SYSC Tryout Coordinator a list of the players that are attending the U10 tryouts from his or her team in the ranked order with the top player ranked as #1. There cannot be a tie on the list. Unranked at the bottom of the list should be any player on the team that decided not to attend the tryouts.
First Day:
· Objective speed and skill drills with no judgment calls
· The first day will help rank players 1-75, so that scrimmage groups can be made
· U9 Coaches must be at the field at least one hour ahead with all equipment in order to set
up; preferably, field layout, including measuring and painting cone/disc locations, can be
effected in the morning
· Two courses should be set up and personnel organized for the Slalom and
If two courses are used, each player should make a run through each course
· We will spend up to 10 minutes organizing and have a short talk with the players and parents. The SYSC Tryout Coordinator or a member of the SYSC Board will make a brief introductory statement
· We will either ask the parents to stay behind a line or leave the field
· If one is timing an event, the same person should time the entire day (please practice with the watch)
· All coaches, including the timer and recorder, at each station should be from different districts
· The same person should not score/time and record
· A non-assigned coach or parent should never time, score or record unless there is prior approval by the Tryout Coordinator.
· If we are using balls for the drills, we should have only the exact amount of balls at the station; and the balls should be equal or very similar in terms of texture, quality, and firmness
· Every player in each tryout station should kick the same balls throughout the tryout. All of the balls do not have to be the same for all stations, but must be for each tryout station which uses a soccer ball
· Whenever a cone or flag is used, always mark the spot under the cone or around the flag with spray paint in case the cone or flag moves
· We may have several older travel players in uniform to help with the following:
1) Demonstrate the dribble pass, trap and shoot, and slalom stations
2) Fill in a tryout card for any player without a card
3) Escort late players out to their group
· A first aid kit and pump for the balls will be available at the set-up area
· Before each group begins each station, the “Evaluation” section for such station should be read to the group by a coach at that station
· At the conclusion of the tryout station rotation, and before the distance run, the Coaches should bring the players to the set-up area for the distance run with the cards, and the coaches should go to their distance run stations.
· If, in the discretion of the SYSC Tryout Coordinator, there is sufficient light, at the conclusion of all station rotations, after the distance run, the coaches at the stations should go back to their drill stations to accommodate late players; the Coaches should then take late players to the station(s) that they missed, in order; late players are not guaranteed a make-up opportunity
· The Head Professional Trainer will provide schedules, maps, pens and score cards in an envelope on a clipboard at the tryout
· After the conclusion of the tryout, the Head Professional Trainer will collect all tryout cards, and together with any Professional Trainer collate the information and generate a skills summary report. No final scores should be tallied at the field
· The Head Professional Trainer will submit a skills summary report that will rank the players top to bottom to aid in forming scrimmage groups for the second tryout; the ranking formula and report format will be a spreadsheet template provided by the SYSC, utilizing standard deviations or other qualitative measures
RAIN
1) Unless the weather is terrible, we will make every attempt to have the tryouts
2) If the SYSC Tryout Coordinator cancels the tryout, he will do so via phone call
to the Travel Soccer coaches who should contact each player parent
3) Please tell your players, parents, and assistant coaches – when in doubt show
up at the field. If a parent or coach does not get a call – show up at the field
4) The rain dates are set for the 15th for girls and 16th for boys
If a parent has a problem with the tryouts, the complaint must be made in writing and addressed to the appropriate SYSC Tryout Coordinator - for girls – Grant Son, and for boys – Chris Lonner. No phone calls will be accepted in regards to complaints.
DRESS
All players should be encouraged to wear shorts and appropriate foot gear - cleats are recommended. All players, however, should wear and/or bring appropriate layers of warmer clothing; the players will experience "down-time" and waiting during the tryout, and should be dressed so as to stay warm during such "down time" and also be able to shed clothing quickly before they perform. This will generally include warm-up pants and a jacket, and may include hats and gloves.
To facilitate identification, weather permitting, players should wear their team jersey.
Before Second Day:
· Analysis of First Day results by the Head Professional Trainer will be reviewed together by Mark Silvester, the Head Professional Trainer, and the SYSC Tryout Coordinator and they will collaborate to make Scrimmage Groups for the Second Day
· Input from the coaches rankings for each team will be taken in consideration for the start of Second Day scrimmages
· The SYSC Tryout Coordinator must approve any departure from First Day Results
· All Professional Trainers and Coaches meet to organize Second Day one hour prior to the start of the Second Day
Second Day:
· Scrimmaging – General Scrimmage to rank players top to bottom.
· Corroborate or reconcile results from the first day of Tryouts. The end product is a
list that ranks players top to bottom, submitted by the Head Professional Trainer to
the Tryout Coordinator at the immediate close of the Second Day.
· All Professional Trainers remain with Mark Silvester and Tryout Coordinator for an
additional 30 minutes to review results, add comments, and make recommendation
in preparation for Third Day.
Before Third Day:
· Make up Scrimmage Groups for Third Day
· Organize Third Day at a Selection Meeting or at least one hour prior to the start of the Third Day with Mark Silvester, Tryout Coordinator and U9 Coaches.
Third Day:
· Scrimmaging – Focus on “bubble players” and Final Selection Meeting.
· Corroborate or reconcile results of the first two days of Tryouts and focus on players
on the A/B border as well as the B/C border. The end product is a list that ranks players top to bottom and separated by team: A team, B Team and two C teams submitted by the Head Professional Trainer to the Tryout Coordinator at the immediate close of the Third Day.
· All Professional Trainers remain with Mark Silvester and Tryout Coordinator for an additional 30 minutes to review results, add comments, and make recommendation in preparation for Third Day.

7. Distance Run
Location: Location “8” - around the field, starting and finishing away from parents
Equipment: 3 stop watches
8 raised cones
4 corner flags
1 tape measure for set up
Personnel: 3 Professional Trainers, as timers (T) of finished times
2 Professional Trainers, as spotters (S) of finishers for timers (one of which should be the starter);
2 Professional Trainers as recorders (R) of runners' finish times
1 Professional Trainer to record the names of finishers
All Coaches to keep runners in finishing order as per chute
Additional Professional Trainers at each turning mark
Evaluation: Each player will run the course once

· Evaluation will be by time by stop watch
· ANY PLAYER THAT INTENTIONALLY PUSHES OR SHOVES ANOTHER RUNNER WILL BE PENALIZED
· Upon crossing the finish line, each player must stay in line; move to the end of the chute and sit down; the order of finish will be the order in which you are sitting down

· The first leg should be a long leg (at least 100 yards) to spread out the runners
· The finish should be away from the parents
Distance: Boys: 480 yards
Girls: 400 yards
Comments: At the finish, form a funnel or chute, to make it easier to keep the runners in the
order of their finish with flags and cones
· The 3 timing Professional Trainers should try to time all runners; with one timer being the primary, another being a back-up, another being the back-up for the back-up; as a runner crosses the line the spotter calls out the finish number and the primary timer calls out the time; if a group is crossing at once, the spotter should allocate runners to the timers in advance
· Timers must keep their stopwatches going after timing a runner (to get the time for their next runner)
· A Professional Trainer spotter should call out to the timing Professional Trainer to alert the timer before and when a runner crosses the line, so the timing Professional Trainer does not have to look up from his or her watch
· Record finish times in order; do not record names until after the race, going down the finishing order in the chute
· As each runner crosses the finish line, the Coaches should move them down the chute and sit them down
· On a separate Distance Run Score Sheet, a Professional Trainer should record the names of the finishers in the order of finish (as sitting down)
· Districts should be run as soon as they arrive at the start of the station
· No group should have a parent or other person pacing them
